HOW TO USE THESE RESOURCES:
Designing your results-oriented medical self-care program is as easy as 1-2-3! These resources are designed to help you each step of the way.
The 2011 Summit resources are specifically designed to help you build Phase I, Phase II and Phase III of a results-oriented self-care program in your organization. Below, you’ll find an overview of each Phase and the resources that go along with it:
Phase 1: Collecting and Contacting.
Overall, a results-oriented medical self-care program will get your employees actively involved in their own health, acting as members of their own health care team.
To get started, your goal in Phase I is to have your employees collect their health information in one place, and contact a primary care provider who meets their needs.
Resources designed for Phase I stress the importance of building a personal health record and cover what kinds of health information your employees should keep. WELCOA’s Phase I resources will help your employees maintain their personal health information in an organized, secure format. Phase I resources also offer instructions for securing a health care provider that will meet your employees’ needs.
Phase II: Recognizing and Reacting.
Once your employees have collected their health information and contacted their primary care providers, you can move forward into Phase II of your results-oriented self-care program.
In Phase II, your goal is to help your employees learn how to recognize their medical symptoms and react appropriately.
Resources for Phase II are designed to offer sound advice for the prevention, management, and appropriate treatment of some common health issues. These resources will help your employees and their family members determine whether their symptoms can be treated at home or if they should seek medical care. With a good self-care book and the addition of WELCOA’s Phase II resources, you’ll be helping your employees take better care of themselves, and reducing the costs associated with unnecessary health care visits.
Phase III: Preparing and Performing.
When your employees have learned to recognize their symptoms and react appropriately, they may determine that they do indeed need to seek medical care.
In Phase III, the goal of your program is to give your employees the skills they need to be prepared for and perform well when interacting with the medical system. This will ensure that they receive the best care possible from the health system.
WELCOA’s Phase III resources are designed to address important skill-building topics that help your employees become informed, medical consumers. Phase III resources will teach your employees how to communicate with their doctors and health care providers. These resources encourage your employees to ask important questions and help them understand what to expect from their health care providers.
